Summary

Your ability to change everything - including yourself - starts here

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman。 In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing。

But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality。 Except for one: Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with - of all things - her mind。 True chemistry results。

Like science, life is unpredictable。 Which is why a few years later, Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America's most beloved cooking show, Supper at Six。 Elizabeth's unusual approach to cooking ('combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride') proves revolutionary。 But as her following grows, not everyone is happy。 Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn't just teaching women to cook。 She's daring them to change the status quo。

Elizabeth Zott is a chemist in the 1960s, and she is not taken seriously because she is a woman。 It is a quirky book with unique characters, a kick butt female protagonist, and clever writing。 I enjoyed it。

An insightful look into the life of a professional women in the 1950 and the challenges they face while juxtaposing how many things remain the same for many professional women。

Nicole Russell

Thought provoking, captivating, funny and emotional all in one! Thoroughly enjoyed the plot too。 Elizabeth Zott pushes the boundaries of 1950s/60s society and is inspiring to women everywhere! Excellent book!

I loved this book。

4。5 stars is what I’m feeling like with this one。 I’m rounding up because I do think that it is an enjoyable page-turner that is worth reading。 But, it does tend a bit toward cheesy and implausible for me。 Would using the word H20 instead of water and talking about the high oxalic acid content of spinach, instead of about its iron, really catapult the heroine’s cooking show to fame? Where this story does shine, however, is in its vivid and heart-wrenching portrayal of the metaphorical chemistry 4。5 stars is what I’m feeling like with this one。 I’m rounding up because I do think that it is an enjoyable page-turner that is worth reading。 But, it does tend a bit toward cheesy and implausible for me。 Would using the word H20 instead of water and talking about the high oxalic acid content of spinach, instead of about its iron, really catapult the heroine’s cooking show to fame? This book is outstanding。 The story is complex, the characters are complex and I was overjoyed during each part。 I love how it’s written as if one train of thought。

It was a roller coaster but in a bad way。 From descriptions of sexual assault to naive and childish monologues of main character which were supposed to be smart。 It was all weird。 Book covered the theme of misogony and feminism but in the most pretentious and cliché way ever。 I've cringed too many times reading this。 It was a roller coaster but in a bad way。 From descriptions of sexual assault to naive and childish monologues of main character which were supposed to be smart。 It was all weird。 Book covered the theme of misogony and feminism but in the most pretentious and cliché way ever。 I've cringed too many times reading this。 。。。more

Such an enjoyable read。 I love the way it starts out with two separate people who seem to have no connections and ends with a motley crew of a family。 It’s funny, captivating, and sad。 All the characters are so unique and well-written but my favorite is the dog。 Don’t sleep on this one。

Very good light read 。

This book is so heartwarming。 Such a delightful read with such interesting unique characters。

For every girl who had a mother who believed in her and wanted more for her, this is your story。

I did enjoy this book。 Although it was promoted as “laugh out loud” um no。 It’s the 1950s and women are not thought of as anything but housewives and objects so exploring some if the darker aspects of women and careers was not that funny…Interesting to compare their struggles with the Harvey couch of today。 It takes bold, courageous people to initiate change。 I am thanking all the beautiful strong people that came before me and the ones that are forging ahead today。 I love that the dog talks!

Marta Anna

5 stars but it deserves at least 6 of them。 Just found another favourite book。

Margaret

This book had such rave reviews I had super high expectations。 It was good。 I just wouldn’t give it a fifth star。 Loved the premise, characterization, and laugh out loud parts but for me it could’ve tied up neater。 I felt the end was rushed。 I had ideas for a different ending。

Gail H Sullivan

Very good read。 It definitely helps one know how far women have come since the 1960’s。 It makes you think and also has humor at the same time。

JennaF

I enjoyed this more than I thought。 It’s still very much a beach read, but a fun and quirky one that celebrates being a little bit odd。

I truly wanted to give this book a higher rating。 Ultimately I did enjoy it, but I was also frustrated。 And not just by the women's rights issues。 What was with all the bold type? Why is every scientist either an idiot or a completely socially awkward "on the spectrum" type of character? Why is religion so vilified? If you are a scientist you can't have faith? I know some excellent scientists (chemists, even) who are very religious。 Every religious character in this book was a pedophile, cheat, I truly wanted to give this book a higher rating。 Ultimately I did enjoy it, but I was also frustrated。 And not just by the women's rights issues。 What was with all the bold type? started off strange and a tad slow but once it got going was really interesting

Fun, smart and hard from time to time。 Well executed。

6:30 was the best developed and most believable character in this book。 The representation of a smart woman in the 1950’s was jaded with 21st century agendas。The writing style made this an easy read but disappointing at best。

Kelsey

Not what I was expecting (in a good way)!! Loved the writing style, characters, topics, and themes。 It all refreshing, different, and interesting story to read!

Abbey Dearden

This book is AMAZING。 It’s insane to see how far we’ve come as women and how far to go。 This book is soooo incredible and if you loved Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow this is your next read

Kimberly Wells

When I got to the last page I was thankful it was over。 This is not laugh out loud hilarious, not even close。 3 ⭐️ only because I support the message of women being awesome in science。

Sylvia

Torn between 4 and 5 stars。 Wonderful book。 So cringey at times - but fairly so。 Wonderful characters that will stay with me。 Wonderful dialogue and writing。 6:30 is awesome- I’ve always thought that would be a great idea for a character and this author nailed it。

DrBobby

This is a lovely book, a full 5 stars, no hesitation。

Kristin Donnelly

Heartwarming, feminist tale of 1950s life

Sophie

Reading this book felt like talking to a friend - Garmus has such an incredible way of drawing the reader into the story! I loved it。 Quirky and funny while still managing to deal with big issues, Lessons in Chemistry takes top spot on my list for the year to date。
